Any other breakfast-for-dinner families out there? Moms and dads, I know you hear me, because let’s be honest…it’s a meal the whole family usually loves and dissolves the picky-eater problem.

When trying to eat real food, breakfast can be a hurdle to jump. Our culture is centered around processed, sugary breakfasts cereals, granola bars, pop tarts, processed meats, and smothering pancakes in high fructose corn syrup. If you are in love with these type of breakfasts, I can assure you will find real food breakfasts that taste outstanding and you’ll feel better after you eat it to!

One of our favorite breakfasts for dinner is pancakes or waffles. But, instead of smothering them in the artificial syrups, try using 100% pure maple syrup. Yes this is still sugar, but having it come from our earth brings me peace of mind and is always a better alternative to highly processed sugars. “But, it’s expensive!”  – I hear you! Costco is a great resource for many less expensive healthy items and still maintains quality. If you’d like, you can see my COSTCO CHEAT SHEET that shows all of the healthy food items I buy (over 100 items!), their prices, and which ones I save a lot of money on. It’s pretty loaded.

But, if the syrup price still seems steep, you can do what I do and make this Simple Berry Syrup instead! This will for sure spread out the longevity of your maple syrup! AND…you get fiber (this helps your blood sugar stay stable), added nutrients, and a much better option for your breakfast for dinner syrups.

Hope you love it as much as we do…actually, I’m pretty sure you will!

Easy Berry Syrup
Print Recipe
I used to only use maple syrup on my pancakes until I tried this fruit syrup. It changed my pancake life and is a great option for pancakes, yogurt, and ice cream! Seriously. I adapted this recipe from 100daysofrealfood.com. Why reinvent the wheel...this recipe rocks!

Ingredients
  • 1 cup frozen mixed organic berries (blueberies work great too!)
  • 1 1/2- 2 tbsp. 100% maple syrup Honey will work too
  • 1/8-1/4 cup water
Servings:
Instructions
  1. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Bring it to a light simmer. Cook until the berries have softened (about 5-10 minutes).
  2. Remove from heat and pour into blender until desired consistency. Use immediately or store in fridge for later.
Recipe Notes

*If you think this will be a big transition from the highly refined-processed syrups in the store, try being a little heavier on the maple syrup. Sometimes we just need that bridge to make it over. Once everyone loves it, it's easier to slowly pull back the amount of added sugar. 😉

**I've tried this with frozen mango. It was de-lish! I sprinkled a touch of cinnamon on top of syrup after pouring on pancake, and topped it with fresh blueberries. It was a really nice switch-up from the regular!

Money Saving Tip: Leftover syrup is amazing on frozen banana ice cream, mixed in with yogurt, or a yogurt parfait.
